Showtime Boxing and the UFC have not shied away from showing their dislike for each other in past years. UFC CEO Dana White has openly expressed his dislike towards the way the organization has operated. In a recent back and-forth between the two organizations, UFC CEO Dana White shared his opinion over a rumor suggesting Showtime Boxing’s end in the combat business. However, Showtime boss Stephen Espinoza has not taken a back seat in this trash talk as he struck back with some stats of his own.

In the press conference of the highly anticipated bout between Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo, Espinoza responded back to the UFC CEO’s comments. Espinoza said, “This will be the third time in the last six months that we’ve done a gate of $20 million. Again our third $20 million gate in the last six months. To put that in perspective, UFC has never done a gate of $20 million in its entire history. We’ve done it three times since April. Like I said this is special.

Currently, Alvarez vs. Charlo could be in the running to break multiple records. The other events that Espinoza has referred to are Gervonta Davis‘ seventh-round knockout win against Ryan Garcia. Some reports suggested that this bout sold around 1.2 million PPVs. The other event was Terence Crawford’s dominating win against Errol Spence, which sold 700,000 PPVs.

UFC and Showtime have built a brilliant business and pioneered the combat industry in MMA and boxing. However, both have also lacked in certain departments. Showtime’s lack of matchmaking is where UFC has never struggled with. On the other hand, the PPV buys from boxing events were far greater than UFC’s.

Espinoza went on Twitter to address this situation. He requested the fanbase to stop suggesting a matchup between Tank and Thurman. And confirmed on the platform that these were just rumors.

In today’s boxing world, such speculations have risen due to an era of misinformation that easily spreads around. The suffering party in such rumors were the boxing fans. However, in this situation, Espinoza took it into his hands to spread awareness regarding the misinformation.
