Chael Sonnen speaks on Khamzat Chimaev fighting Colby Covington or Belal Muhammad! Belal is riding high on confidence after his victory against Vicente Luque in the main event of UFC Fight Night. He executed his game plan perfectly for the full course of his fight. He used leg licks to keep Vicente Luque at bay and then set him up for takedowns. Many UFC veterans like Daniel Cormier and Henry Cejudo praised him for his victory.
In the post-fight interview, he called out the number one welterweight contender Colby Covington. Although Dana said Khamzat and Colby will fight in the near future, Belal still shoots his shot-calling Dana White for a fight against either Colby or Khamzat. If Belal ever faces Colby or Khamzat remains to be seen.
Chael Sonnen watched this fight with great interest, and he believes Belal vs Khamzat makes more sense than Colby vs Khamzat. Talking about it on his YouTube channel he said, “I don’t think they have that match. I don’t think they’ve ever had that match. I don’t even think they’ve spoken to Colby about the match. Dana just said, ‘This is the direction we’re going.’ It was meant to be a compliment to Colby.”

Sonnen believes the whole idea behind Colby vs Khamzat fight was to bring the spotlight to Colby, but now that Belal is in the mix, a fight between him and Khamzat for the number one contender makes more sense.
He said, “Dana was trying to say, ‘Covington, who’s a star, I’m going to take my star and I’m gonna put him in the main event. Whoever wins between Burns and Chimaev is going to feed into that main event.’ It was meant to be something very sweet for Colby.”
He added, “I also wasn’t sold on the idea that the organization was willing to make that a number one contender’s match. My gut feeling is that the organization would lean towards the idea that if Chimaev wins, Chimaev would fight for the championship. Knowing Colby the way I do, that’s going to insult him, and it’s just not going to work. I never talked to Colby, this is me speaking.”
