“Down to fight”- Stephen Thompson eyes fights against The Diaz brothers

Stephen Thompson, Nick Diaz, and Nate Diaz

Stephen Thompson, Nick Diaz, and Nate Diaz are all pioneers of the sport. That’s not the only thing common between them. Unfortunately for them, they are on the downside of their careers. All of them are on losing streaks, they have progressively looked like a watered-down version of their prime selves, they all compete in the welterweight division and are all looking to fight again this year.

Thompson, who is ranked No. 9 welterweight rankings, has lost his last two fights against Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns. In both of those fights, the 39-year-old got out-grappled and is clearly looking for where he can use his patented kickboxing style.

Nick, currently not even in the rankings, hasn’t fought since September when he was defeated by Robbie Lawler in a TKO loss in his comeback fight after more than six years away from the sport. Cesar Gracie, his longtime coach, reportedly announced that a return to action is planned for later this year.

Nate, the younger of the Diaz brothers, is champing at the bit to step in the cage as he looks to fight out the final bout on his current UFC contract. His frustration around the inability to sign the fight has been evident on social media, with Diaz lashing out for the promotion.

Stephen Thompson took to Twitter and stated his interest in fighting either of the Diaz brothers. He tweeted, “I’m down to fight @nickdiaz209 or @NateDiaz209 ! I have nothing but respect for both of those guys and I’m ready to go. Who wouldn’t love good striking battle?! #respect #readytogo

A fight against either of the Diaz brothers would make sense. All are out of prime fighters who however are household names in the sport of combat. The fight would draw massive numbers and would be a fan favorite.
