Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones were headed for a title bout at UFC 295. However, calamity befell the card when Jon Jones pulled out of the card with a pectoral tear. This injury came weeks before this highly anticipated fight. Miocic was devastated to learn of the postponement. The bout was slated for the UFC’s 30th-anniversary event at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Even though Miocic was prepared, the UFC decided to put Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall in the interim championship match instead of giving Miocic a chance to compete. Reacting to this news, Miocic said this:

I don’t know why I didn’t get picked, which is fine. I understand they have a direction they want to go. I’m okay with that. Every guy in the division is tough. I definitely want to fight the biggest fish, which is Jon Jones.

Stipe Miocic is one of the most successful heavyweight fighters and holds the UFC record for most wins in heavyweight championship bouts. Jones is undoubtedly the most dominating competitor in UFC history. With a 20-4 career record, Miocic, 41, is a two-time UFC heavyweight champion. Per Dana White, it would have been disrespectful if Stipe was to fight for the Interim title. White said he intended to make the fight between Jones and Miocic next year.
