Superstar Max Holloway has taken the initiative to approach Nike with a bold request to become the official shoe sponsor for the UFC, thus replacing Dwayne Johnson‘s Project Rock brand. Holloway’s discontent with the current footwear sponsor led him to suggest that Nike pay his fines and support him if they were willing to take on this new role.

Under the existing arrangement, all UFC athletes are obligated to wear Under Armour shoes branded with Dwayne Johnson’s Project Rock during major events. However, Holloway openly expressed his reservations about these shoes during an interview on Full Size Run by Complex. When asked about his opinion on the Project Rock footwear, he responded by saying, “It is what it is. It’s about the company, and I like ‘The Rock.’ I know him and I know his agent.”

Drawing attention to Nike’s history with basketball legend Michael Jordan, Holloway referenced the recent release of the film “Air” and made a compelling case for Nike to expand its reach into the realm of MMA. Holloway appealed to Nike, suggesting that they pay his fines and allow him to showcase their shoes during his walkouts, much like how they famously supported Michael Jordan by paying his fines during his basketball career.

The Nike Air Jordan 1s, released in 1985, quickly became a beloved sneaker line, captivating the hearts of countless collectors and sneakerheads around the globe. According to the widely circulated legend, Michael Jordan faced $5,000 fines from the NBA for wearing black and red sneakers during his debut year. In fact, the NBA even sent a letter to Nike in February 1985, forbidding the use of black and red sneakers. Nike, seizing the opportunity, cleverly utilized this controversy to generate additional hype for the Air Jordan 1s.

Nike stepped up by paying the fines for each game that Jordan played while wearing the iconic Air Jordan 1s. They even leveraged the forbidden status of the shoes by employing creative advertising with a captivating forbidden theme, making them even more desirable to consumers. However, it is important to note that Complex has raised the possibility that the widely circulated story of the NBA banning the black and red Jordans may be a myth.

Max Holloway‘s bold appeal to Nike to become the official shoe sponsor of the UFC, along with his request for them to pay his fines, has undoubtedly captured the attention of fans and sneaker enthusiasts worldwide. As the story continues to unfold, the question remains. Will Nike respond to Holloway’s call and make a groundbreaking foray into the world of MMA? Fight fans and sneaker enthusiasts eagerly await any developments that could pave the way for this unique collaboration between Nike and the UFC.
