Throwback to the time when Dana White defended Colby Covington over allegedly racist remarks before his 2nd title fight
Dana White defended Colby Covington after he was accused of making racist comments about Kamaru Usman
Both UFC President Dana White and Colby Covington have been involved in their fair share of controversies. The UFC President and the welterweight contender have both never been shy to speak their mind. However, some of Colby’s most scandalous remarks came during the buildups to both his fights against Kamaru Usman.
The Nigerian Nightmare successfully defended his title against Colby twice. Both matches were very competitive as the fighters brought out the best in each other. And in the leadup to both fights, Colby hurled insults at Usman incessantly. He called him “Marty Fakenewsman,” made fun of his father, and mocked his heritage.
However, many thought Colby took it too far when he asked Usman, “Did you get a call from, freaking, your little tribe? Did they give you some smoke signals for you?” UFC fighter Sijara Eubanks said about the statements, “It was flat-out racist. It was racist. It was disgusting.” However, UFC President Dana White came to Covington’s defense.
He said, “We don’t muzzle anybody here. We let everybody speak their mind. I don’t know what he said that was racist.” This response shifted the ire of the fans from Colby to Dana as he defended Colby’s remarks. However, this wouldn’t be the last time Dana would be at the center of a political controversy. The UFC’s policy of not muzzling any of their fighters leads to a lot of controversial remarks but it’s also what makes the buildups to fights so thrilling.
A History of Dana White’s Controversies
The President of the UFC, Dana White, is known for devil may care attitude during conversations. This aspect of his personality has endeared him to many fans while making enemies out of others. Dana has a lot of high-profile disputes and feuds. One of his longest-running feuds is his feud with Ariel Helwani.
The veteran journalist incurred Dana’s wrath when he leaked the news of Brock Lesnar being re-signed by the UFC ahead of UFC 200. This essentially led to him being banned by the UFC. Despite being reinstated, the bad blood hasn’t died between Helwani and White. Dana has also been at odds with fighters, Cris Cyborg being the prime example.

The dispute started when Cris refused to join the UFC as they didn’t have a women’s featherweight division and Cris couldn’t cut to 135lbs. This infuriated White who lashed out, accusing her of steroid use and claiming she looked like “Wanderlei Silva in a dress and heels.” Despite Cris joining the UFC and the feud being put on ice for a while, her loss of the title at UFC 232 subsequently led to the feud being reignited. And it seems like she will be on the UFC’s blacklist for the foreseeable future.
Most recently, Dana White has been embroiled in a feud with YouTuber turned-boxer, Jake Paul. The feud has had everything from callouts, to diss tracks and bans. The most recent entry came when Jake fired shots at Dana after he beat Anderson Silva in a boxing match. Safe to say, Dana White has made his fair share of enemies in the business and it doesn’t look like it discourages him in the slightest from being who he is.
