UFC 285 has been scheduled to be headlined by Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight championship. The fight will mark former UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones’ return to the octagon after three years of lay-off. Jon Jones’ UFC career has been a roller coaster ride filled with greatness and controversies.

In 2020, a nationwide protest broke out for the Black Lives Matter movement after George Floyd’s killing by police officers in Minneapolis. In Albuquerque, Jon Jones‘ hometown, some of the violent protestors came out to vandalize public and personal properties.

A video surfaced wherein Jon Jones was seen snatching away spray cans from some of the protestors. “Do you want to make the situation worse? It’s alrady bad. There’s no reason to break the windows. What if someone else’s Mom and Dad do to you?” Jones urged protestors to stop vandalizing personal and public properties.

The throwback video dates back to 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic had already kept governments and economies aroung the world on their toes.

Will Jon Jones’ three year lay-off play factor in his heavyweight championship run?

Jon Jones is set to take on former UFC interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane at UFC 285. The winner will be crowned as the king of the vacant heavyweight title. Jones is coming off a three-year long lay-off after his last successful title defense at UFC 247 against Dominic Reyes in 2020. Since then, Jones had been teasing return to the octagon.

Originally scheduled for Francis Ngannou, Ciryl Gane was later replaced as Jones’ opponent after Ngannou’s shocking departure from the UFC. Thereby, vacating the heavyweight championship. Jon Jones is the former light heavyweight champion and has 14 successful title defenses to his name.

Despite his accolades, Jones’ three year lay-off has worried fans of possible ring rust due to inactivity. However, UFC President, Dana White has assured fans that Jones took the time off to be able to naturally bulk up to heavyweight.

Ciryl Gane is a french MMA fighter with an extensive background in Muay Thai kickboxing. Gane was undefeated till 11 pro fights in MMA till former heavyweight champion, Ngannou handed him his first loss. Both Gane and Jones have an array of skills to display. The UFC 285 card is scheduled on March 4.
