Tom Aspinall became the face of UK MMA with the victory at UFC 295. Aspinall is a big name in the UK, where there is a fight song for him. However, he recently received backlash for comments he made during his interview with Nina Marie Daniele. Interestingly, Daniele herself came to the defense of Aspinall.

Tom Aspinall and his father, Andy Aspinall, recently appeared on the Fight Disciples podcast. The podcast is hosted by BT Sports’ Nick Peet and Adam Catterall. During the interview, the NSFW question to Nina Marie Daniele came up. Aspinall provided a clarification for it. This is what he said.

That's what we spoke about off camera. She gets all these kind of mad questions, and then she asked me if I want to ask her anything. So, I thought I'd throw a weird one in that she'd asked me.

This was the first time that Aspinall provided clarification on his controversial remarks. The MMA community was split on the controversy. While some saw it as disrespectful, others cited it as people failing to understand British humor. Nevertheless, the incident was a black mark on the otherwise gentlemanly status of Tom Aspinall.

It needs to be noted that Nina Marie Daniele is a very close friend of Sean Strickland. Strickland is one of the most controversial fighters in MMA. His remarks on interviews with Daniele were deemed misogynistic by many. Nevertheless, Daniele was in Australia for UFC 293 when Strickland defeated Israel Adesanya to become the UFC middleweight champion. He will be defending the title against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297.

Tom Aspinall wants legacy fights with Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic

Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic were the original headliners of UFC 295, with Sergei Pavlovich as the backup fighter. Unfortunately, Jones suffered an injury that forced his withdrawal. This provided Tom Aspinall an opportunity to become the champion at UFC 295. Aspinall is 30 years of age, which is rather young for a heavyweight.

Moreover, he already has big plans for his future. He talked about it in a recent interview on Fight Disciples. This is what he said about it.

That was my goal, to win the heavyweight title under any circumstances. I've won it, and now I just want to fight for legacy. You know, that's why I want to fight Stipe and Jon Jones.

Apparently, Aspinall’s primary goal was to win the UFC title. Having achieved it, he has set his sights on legacy fights. Jones is the arguable GOAT of MMA whereas Miocic is the arguable GOAT of the heavyweight division. However, rumors are that both Jones and Miocic will retire after their bout. That would elevate Aspinall as the undisputed champion. However, it will destroy Aspinall’s plans.

In case you missed it!
