On July 23 2022, the rising Heavyweight contender from England, Tom Aspinall was once again set to headline the UFC London card in the O2 Arena. He was set to face the top contender Curtis Blaydes in the main event. Blaydes was one of the toughest test for the Brit in the Octagon.

Blaydes is a very elite wrestler. He was looking to stop the Aspinall hype train and make his case for the title. On, the other hand the #6 Heavweight was looking to get another high-profile win. The home crowd’s hopes were shattered as 15 secs into the fight the Brit collapsed to the floor in agony holding his knee.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour yesterday, Aspinall discussed his recovery from the knee injury, his exact injury, his timetable for rehab and he revealed a history of knee problems in the past that caused the injury at UFC London. Aspinall revealed that the injury wasn’t new and had been reoccurring in the past.

After the revelation Helwani asked, “I know you were on a rocket ship and you were getting big fights after big fights, headlining two shows back to back in London in the span of months. At any point were you thinking man I need to take a step back and let me fix this before maybe something bad happens.”

“Whether it’s in training or in a fight? Were you ever contemplating that or because you kept getting big opportunities, you didn’t wanted to get off that train track?” Helwani added.

The Brit agreed with the point stating, ” Of course, I got greedy Ariel, I am not even gonna lie about it, I got greedy, you know when you are on a roll and you’re going, it’s like you just want to keep it going? I actually got this injury before I got signed by the UFC and I was like I can’t not get this UFC contract like I’m gonna fight and I’m gonna manage it.”

He further explained how after getting wins after wins over guys that were his idols he didn’t want to stop. He just kept pushing through which ultimately resulted in the injury at UFC London “I begged Dana to come back to the UK, begged the UFC to come back to the UK, and they said yeah sure, we are gonna come back in 10 weeks.”

“So I thought, I can’t get the knee sorted now…let’s just do one more, we can do one more. I’ve managed it for 6/7 fights, let’s just do this one more…and then we will get the knee sorted out. And yeah I gambled a little bit too much on this one.” He added.
