Dana White broke the unfortunate news about Jon Jones withdrawing from the UFC 295 card. He was scheduled to fight the former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. Since the fight fell off, the UFC booked Tom Aspinall to fight Sergei Pavlovich for the interim heavyweight championship. This fight takes place at Madison Square Garden as the co-main event of UFC 295.
Sergei Pavlovich is a very dangerous contender in the heavyweight division. He has 15 knockout wins to his name and currently rides a six-fight win streak. He has notable wins over Curtis Blaydes, Tai Tuivasa, and Derek Lewis. Tom Aspinall takes on this dangerous challenge on short notice and promises to shock the world. When talking about his fight against Pavlovich with Oscar Willis, here’s what he had to say:
I'm fighting the most dangerous guy in the UFC on two weeks notice, but I’m willing to put it all on the line. This is my absolute dream and I’m f*cking doing a Bisping.Tom Aspinall told Oscar Willis (The Mac Life)
Michael Bisping shocked the world at UFC 199 by defeating Luke Rockhold. Rockhold held the middleweight title at the time and Bisping took it from him. He took this fight on a 17-day notice and became the first British UFC champion. Aspinall looks up to Bisping and promises to recreate the moment. He is currently the fourth-ranked heavyweight contender in the UFC. He has a record of 13-3 with a hundred percent finish rate. Now, he is eyeing to become the first British UFC heavyweight champion.
A win over Sergei Pavlovich would make Aspinall the first British heavyweight champion. If things go to plan, Aspinall could face Jon Jones to unify the titles. However, he needs to defeat the dangerous Russian at UFC 295.
UFC 295 gets a new main event as Jon Jones gets sidelined due to injury
Jon Jones was scheduled to defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic in a legacy matchup for UFC 295. The fight was canceled due to an injury suffered by Jones during a sparring session. This left the main event of UFC 295 in jeopardy.
Dana White announced the new main event for the UFC 295 on Instagram. Jiri Prochazka faces Alex Periera for the light heavyweight championship in the main event of UFC 295. This fight was originally scheduled to go down as the co-main event. UFC replaces the co-main event spot with Tom Aspinall vs Sergei Pavlovich for the interim heavyweight championship.
Prochazka aims to claim the belt he left behind due to an injury. He vacated the belt in 2022 and will return to fight for it at UFC 295. On the other hand, Pereira defeated former champion Jan Blochowicz at UFC 291. Pereira aims to become a double champion in the UFC by defeating Jiri in the main event of UFC 295.
