“I never watched the show,” Tony Ferguson recalls his first time knowing about The Ultimate Fighter

Tony Ferguson- Stephan Bonnar vs Forrest Griffin

Seems an unbelievable but true story, Tony Ferguson never knew about The Ultimate Fighter until he participated in the show. Ferguson last fought at UFC 274 with an unfortunate knockout loss to Michael Chandler. Despite a 4-fight losing streak, Ferguson is still in high hopes of getting back to the winning column. Ferguson in his prime was one of the most dangerous fighters in the UFC who was running a 12- fight winning streak.

Ferguson in his prime had wins over the likes of Gleison Tibau, Kevin Lee, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Rafael Dos Anjos, Lando Vannata, Edson Barboza, Josh Thomson, and many more. Ferguson, a former interim-lightweight champion, is nowhere close to a title fight but at least his name has lasted enough to grab hold of other opportunities in life, coaching on a huge level is one of them. Ferguson is now lately and frequently proposing an idea to coach at the Ultimate Fighter against Khabib Nurmagomedov, the man who Ferguson was slated to fight multiple times but this battle was unfortunately cursed enough to not happen.

In an interview with The Schmo, Tony Ferguson talks about the first time he underwent an experience with UFC’s exclusive reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. Ferguson was the winner of the 13th season of the show where he was coached by then UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

“I was in The Ultimate Fighter [Season 13] for the first time, we would walk in through the entrance and there were these three pictures, it had Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar. I never watched the show. My coach Joseph Yannick, at the time coach Haas, he says ‘you never watched a show?’ I said No [then] he’s like you’ll be okay. I didn’t know it we walked past all these images. I asked somebody about it and they were the ones that saved the UFC. You know during the pandemic I did the exact same thing...

Ferguson here is talking about being the headliner of the first UFC event during the pandemic which was UFC 249. He fought Justin Gaethje for the interim title and this fight was the beginning of the end of Ferguson’s nearly 8-year-long winning streak. What did you make of Ferguson’s story? Do you think Ferguson can get back to the winning column? Where do you put Ferguson amongst the most fan-favourite fighters of all time?
