“Waiting on his fat a*s”- Tony Ferguson reveals his plans on coaching the TUF season against Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 fce-off
One of the most cursed fights to never come to fruition is undoubtedly Tony Ferguson vs Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Lightweight fight between the two never took place in spite of the promotion booking it on five separate occasions.
El Cucuy is now going up a weight class to fight Li Jingliang in the co-main event at UFC 279 this weekend. After a string of losses at the Lightweight Tony is returning to the 170lbs division in a very long time. He last fought in the division during his TUF days. He is looking to get back to the win column after his 12-fight win streak was shattered by Justin Gaethje at UFC 249.
On the other hand, Khabib after defending his title against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 announced his retirement from the sport. The reason for his retirement was the sudden death of his father Abdulmanap due to Covid-19 complications. He hung up the gloves promising his mother that he was done competing.
Since announcing his retirement Khabib has been very busy with his many business endeavours. He has recently launched his own fighting promotion known as Eagle FC and is busy promoting it. He has also taken the role of coaching his fellow teammates including Lightweight title challenger Islam Makhachev.

Tony Ferguson believes that Khabib Nurmagomedov isn’t done fighting
Even after his retirement, Ferguson is still confident that he can lure Khabib out of retirement for a fight. At worst he would love to coach a TUF season against the Eagle. In the past, the UFC President Dana White has already shown his interest in having the two Lightweight as coaches in The ULtimate Fighter’s future season.
During his UFC 279 pre-fight presser, while talking to the media when El Cucuy was asked about his interest in coaching TUF against Khabib, Tony said, “We got the green light, We’re waiting on Khabib’s fat ass. I actually called him Khabib. Did you guys hear that s***? We’re waiting on ‘Fathead’s fat ass and I’m going to be real with you, we got the green light from the brass, went and talked to them.”

“We got the green light from his coach. We got the green light from his agent. His agent comes up and tries to hug me, he was all in pink, f****** looked like Pinky from Friday. It was funny as f***. You can spot him anywhere. He comes up and he’s like ‘let’s do this.’ In reality, we’re just waiting for Khabib’s fat ass.” He further revealed.
Ferguson concluded by stating, “He’s the one that’s scared, Regardless it’s a fight or not, we’ll go and coach and I’m sure we’ll make it entertaining. He’ll break before the fighters around that team and I’ve still got some good material that I haven’t used yet so I’m just waiting for that thing.”
Ferguson further stated that he still believes that the Eagle isn’t done fighting and he is the one who will make Khabib come out of retirement. Although we never saw these two elites fight each other in the octagon and now after the Eagle’s retired it seems like a far-fetched reality. Although, a TUF season would be interesting as we will get to witness the two Lightweights against each other.
