Curtis “Razor” Blaydes will hope to secure the next Heavyweight title shot if he can defeat surging Russian contender Sergei Pavlovich in their upcoming fight. The five-round main event between the Heavyweight contenders will not go all five rounds. Both fighters have knockout powers, and Pavlovich has 14 knockout wins from his 17 professional fights. In the aftermath of defeating Pavlovich, Blaydes has an interesting decision regarding his future.
Curtis Blaydes said, “If I win, I’ll wait. I’ll wait for a title shot. I don’t care who it is. If it’s Jon, if it’s Stipe, if they bring in Brock Lesnar, I’ll wait. I’m not in this for glory. That’s not what wakes me up and gets me working out in the morning. I’m here for money. And I know if I get the belt, I get more money. Whoever I have to fight to get the belt, I really don’t care who it is. It’d help, obviously, if it was Jon. It helps my legacy, but it’s not the end-all, be-all for me.”
After coming close to attaining the title shot twice, Blaydes will wait out this time for a title shot. It does not matter if Brock Lesnar returns or whatever happens. He believes he has put in the work and deserves the next title shot after the Jones vs Stipe fight. The Jones vs Stipe title fight is further delayed for some reason.
Blaydes was close to a title shot in 2021 but ran into Derrick Lewis’s hand. After the loss, Blaydes took on upcoming contenders like Jarizinho Rozenstruik, Chris Daukas and Tom Aspinall to remain among the top contenders in the division. Now, Pavlovich is all that remains. He will likely get the next title shot if he can defeat Pavlovich.
Teammate of Curtis Blaydes defeated Sergei Pavlovich in 2018
The only loss of Pavlovich’s career came in 2019 against legendary MMA legend Alistair Overeem. Overeem and Curtis Blaydes trained together at Fight Elevation in Colorado. It was the first time Pavlovich fought in the UFC. He was known for his fighting skills in the Russian MMA circuit.
However, when the fight started, both fighters tried swinging big, and Overeem began to apply pressure by mixing wrestling with his kickboxing. However, Pavlovich countered it with some takedown attempts, and eventually, Overeem got his opponent on the ground and deployed ground and pound to secure the TKO finish.
The fight against Overeem remains the only blemish of Pavlovich’s career. Since then, Pavlovich has put on an impressive win streak in the UFC and will fight Overeem’s teammate Blaydes in the main event of UFC Fight Night 222.
