Colares initially thought it was a couple arguing over some personal matter and was hesitant to interfere. Later he saw that man grabbing the woman’s phone and riding away on his bike. At that moment, it struck Colares that it was a robbery and he decided to chase the man on a bike.

“I saw this guy kind of arguing with a young woman and then he yanked the cell phone from her hand. She sat on the ground, crying. He got on his bicycle and rode away….The woman said he had mugged her so I gave chase,” said Colares.

According to the fighter, he and his friends successfully chased down the man who caught him with a Kimura. In order to avoid any casualties, he then kept the robber on the ground with a rear naked choke. He said: “We swept him and I immobilized him with a kimura. I stayed on the ground with him for a while, holding him in a rear-naked choke.”  Moments like these give the true meaning to mixed martial arts. It is mainly discovered to defend yourself in extreme situations. To be able to make quick decisions and take the right actions is what makes a trained MMA artist different from ordinary people.

After the incident took place, Felipe Colares mentioned that in the past he was a part of a program called Empoderadas (Empowered) in which he learned how to fight violence against women.

“I work in a government project called Empoderadas (Empowered), which fights any kind of violence against women. I learn prevention techniques and verbalization to avoid it,” said Colares.

According to the fighter, the program was started by the government and was mobilized by former Jiu-jitsu champion Erica Paes. Throughout its history, this program has helped numerous women and saved them from violence.
