Muhammad Mokaev is settling to the prime realization that one of his dreams is going up in smoke. The Russian-born Brit made his UFC debut in 2022 and has been hell-bent on becoming the youngest champion. The IMMAAF alum aims to surpass 265 lbs G.O.A.T Jon Jones‘ record of becoming a champ at 23.
Muhammad Mokaev’s last lackluster performance did not win over the fight community. To MMA Junkie and others at UFC Fight Night 238 post-fight presser, he nudged dealing with symptoms of staph. He recently spoke about it again at length. While he still reveres Jones as the endgame, here’s what he has to say about the heavyweight:
I always look at the budget, on the mechanics of the person, um, you know the thing - where he [Tom Aspinall] put hands on his shoulder...I think Jon aware he's a challenge...if he wasn't really he would hug him back maybe, he a little bit arrogant. Jon...Jon doesn't look in shape...doesn't look like he trains.Muhammad Mokaev to UFC on TNT Sports
At UFC Fight Night 238, Mokaev came out with a lopsided win over Alex Perez. His subsequent title shot aspirations for the flyweight gold did not sit well with fans. Last year, he had already voiced his intentions to rise to the gold. Attributing to a gruesome ordeal on his legs and unwilling flyweights above him, the fighter is now away from a title shot.
Now he has weighed in on Alexandre Pantoja making a maiden defense against #10 ranked Steve Erceg. Contrary to Tom Aspinall dismissing Jones as not big enough, Mokaev also doused the idea that Jon Jones looks nowhere near his usual in-shape self.
Jones and the UFC are adamant about a showdown between the heavyweight GOAT and Stipe Miocic. As such, Aspinall will have to wait his turn. This doesn’t mean Jones is dodging the young aspirant, but just taking it one obstacle at a time. However, fans and fighters alike would like to see Aspinall take on the undefeated champion soon.
Muhammad Mokaev insists the UFC would have let him break Jon Jones’ record if they felt like it
Current flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja is on the high horses. Having defeated most divisional staples, he recently gestured a dominant 5-0 feat over the current lineup. This was during his attendance at UFC Fight Night 237.
Consequently, sure-tongued and undefeated Mokaev has always wanted to rise to the challenge. And he says he is ready for the flyweight giant. The fighter wants to surpass Jon Jones’ record of being the youngest champ but to no avail. Now he thinks the promotion does not want to break Jones’ privilege of having that record squashed. In a recent interview with SunSport, he said:
When I came to the UFC, I said, 'This is my dream.' Ninety-nine percent of people thought, 'This guy is delusional...Youngest UFC champion, what is he talking about?'Muhammad Mokaev to SunSport
The flyweight gold will be up for grabs, for rookie Steve Erceg, who just bagged his first octagon finish knocking out Matt Schnell. He faces Pantoja next. However, Mokaev isn’t out of the fight yet and hopes he can make his way to the top.
