In the recent UFC 287 event, Gilbert Burns defeated Jorge Masvidal, who was competing in front of his hometown crowd. This loss marks Masvidal’s fourth consecutive defeat in the UFC. But in all this, Ben Askren was the happiest among them all.
Earlier, in an interview with Daniel Cormier prior to UFC 287, Ben Askren predicted that Jorge Masvidal will not be able to defeat Gilbert Burns. Askren, who was famously knocked out by Masvidal in 2019 by a lethal flying knee, had all his money on Burns to emerge victorious. Moreover, he also thinks that Masvidal initially didn’t want to fight Burns and only accepted the fight after feeling pressured to do so.
When Daniel Cormier asked Askren to give his views on Masvidal beating Burns, he said, “No, That’s why he’s been saying no to Burns, because he doesn’t think he’s gonna win either. DC, you know how most of these dudes work. If they think, ‘I can beat that dude up,’ they say yes easy. If they think they can’t then they say no. That’s how they work.”
In that interview, he also said if Masvidal manages to beat Gilbert Burns, he may secure a title shot. Askren believes Burns is undoubtedly one of the best in the division. Therefore, defeating him would be a significant accomplishment for Masvidal and could potentially lead to a title fight.
Ben Askren is relieved after Jorge Masvidal’s retirement following defeat to Burns
In 2019, Ben Askren suffered a defeat against Jorge Masvidal with a 5-second knockout. Since then, he’s been the recipient of several trolls and social media memes. Askren took to Twitter to express his relief, saying that Masvidal’s retirement means he no longer has to see the knockout knee highlights.
Burns won the match by a unanimous decision, with two judges scoring the fight 30-27 in his favor and the third judge scoring it 29-28. Burns was able to outperform Masvidal in striking and also completed takedowns to gain control time.
Masvidal was close to being knocked out during the third round, but he managed to survive. However, Burns continued to dominate the fight by securing another takedown and controlling the action.
