Conor McGregor is not afraid to speak his mind even if that means making a few people uncomfortable. One such incident led him to a confrontation with an offended Dagestani journalist back in 2019. Here is what happened:
Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov had an ugly rivalry. This ultimately culminated in a record-breaking showdown back in 2018. There was lots of drama surrounding the matchup. Many things were said in the press conference leading up to the fight. Some of Conor’s comments must have offended the Dagestani people. One such individual confronted Conor in Moscow where he said:
If you hate Khabib and his team, why do you say bad things about all people? All people, my father? My brother? You think all are cowards?A Dagestani journalist to Conor McGregor in Russia
Conor McGregor went to Moscow in 2019 for a week-long promotional tour. During the tour, McGregor announced his return to the UFC in January 2020. He called for a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov after watching Nurmagomedov’s victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 242. It was also related to his role as an ambassador for the betting firm Parimatch. McGregor’s visit stirred security concerns as individuals surrounded his hotel, presumably attempting to confront him. This was when the Dagestani journalist threw the bottle at Conor.
McGregor continued to call for a rematch even after Khabib’s retirement in 2020. McGregor’s disrespectful behavior towards Khabib’s family, religion, and homeland before and after their initial fight affected Khabib’s willingness for a rematch. Despite Dana White‘s efforts to arrange a rematch, it never happened, leaving McGregor without the chance to avenge his loss.
