The main event was an absolute shocker to everyone watching as it was nothing short of a real-life movie. You couldn’t write a script like that main event fight. Leon took a page out of Rocky’s movie and put everyone in awe with his finish of Usman.
Kamaru Usman, who is the pound-for-pound champion and also in the Mt. Rushmore of one of the greatest welterweights of all time. Leon, who is the underdog throughout the fight pulled a left-kick knockout out of his hat to end the dominant reign of Usman in the welterweight division. Everyone including the commentators, Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier had written “Rocky” off as the fight came to an end. Following the victory, DC met with Leon backstage and confessed his real-time reactions to his fight.
“That was tremendous, man” – Daniel Cormier and Leon Edwards share a laugh backstage
ESPN MMA posted a YouTube Shorts which showed the footage of DC meeting up with Leon “Rocky” Edwards after UFC 278. Daniel explained to Leon that the commentary team gave up on his chances to win the fight against The Nigerian Nightmare and were all shocked that the fight turned around in the last minute of the five-round fight. Leon was 3-1 going into the fifth round and was in desperate need of a finish to win the welterweight championship.
“We wrote your obituary,” said DC talking to Edwards. “I was like, it’s over, dog. And then this dude [Leon’s coach] was like, ‘give yourself a chance, Rock.’ Congratulations, man. You deserve it. That was amazing,” added Cormier. Leon also acknowledged that it wasn’t his best performance but DC was quick to point out that it did not matter in the end because he won the fight.
Leon was almost broken in between rounds of the fight as Kamaru was dominating him throughout the fight. However, Leon and his team did not lose hope until the last minute and finally made history.
