UFC play-by-play commentator Jon Anik believes that UFC 298’s star-studded showdown would be “disgustingly good.” Consequently, one cannot help but agree. Boasting big names, the build-up (and weigh-ins) has seen much spectacle already. ‘Old Man’ Alexander Volkanovski falling asleep at UFC 298 pre-fight presser. Welterweight Ian Garry‘s altercation with a fan outside the Honda Center in Anaheim. To Bobby Green‘s zesty commentary on Mackenzie Dern. And now, Ilia Topuria gets in the mix.
UFC 298 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) occurs at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. In just a few hours, 14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC undefeated Topuria makes his play at the featherweight gold. Ahead of this, the Spaniard has gone viral in rare footage, along with his camp. The video on X (@mma_orbit) shows his crew chanting to cheer on the fighter during a dinner at the UFC Host hotel in Irvine. Many people have their hands raised, documenting it on their phones.
The post is rightfully captioned “Team Topuria is out in numbers in Anaheim!” Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time he has gone viral in a while. Channeling his inner Conor McGregor, Topuria has gone viral many times now. However, not all fans have taken his banking on the Dubliner well. Nonetheless, he went viral when Spanish stars Iniesta, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and more wished him luck more recently.
Despite considering that Alexander Volkanovski would be one of the easiest fights of his career, he has maintained some order of reverence. Even in defiance, using his belt for a pre-fight photoshoot, Topuria has maintained some sense of amiability with the champion. Alongside, it’s his correlation with other peers that is also very notable. Such as – Merab Dvalishvili.
Ilia Topuria and Merab Dvalishvili maintain a valuable association
Ilia Topuria faces reigning featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski in just over a few hours. The undefeated Spaniard had not taken well to ‘The Great’ vowing to rectify the ‘0’ in his stats. Hence, his brash attributes had earned him the label of being cocky.
However, he does maintain a deep-seated reverence for the champion. Despite numerous sly jabs at the champ, he lauds the champion on his ground game, striking, and cutting the distance well. Even at the UFC 298 ceremonial weigh-in staredowns, Topuria shook on it with his rival.
Moreover, the fighter remains likable (despite his supposed cockiness), due to the company he keeps. This includes Merab Dvalishvili, who fights on the same card. In the built-up the duo had gone viral many times, complementing each other. Now, they have done so yet again. Merab Dvalishvili and Ilia Topuria are visibly hyping up each other before UFC 298’s ceremonial weigh-in cutting, in wholesome new footage. Check it out down below:
Dvalishvili squares off with bantamweight Henry Cejudo on the fight card. Funnily enough, UFC 298 ‘Embedded,’ Vlog Series sees Alexander Volkanovski meet up with Cejudo and reminisce about them both fighting Georgians.
It’s these little momentous titbits that make the fight up to be even more interesting than it is.
