In a UFC bout, O’Malley went head-to-head with Sterling to vie for the bantamweight championship. Prior to the fight, ‘Sugar’ O’Malley was considered an underdog by the majority of observers, with Sterling expected to successfully safeguard his championship title. Nevertheless, O’Malley defied expectations by clinching victory via a second-round technical knockout.

UFC legend Chael Sonnen recently talked about O’Malley’s overall success in the promotion. He said: “Sean O’Malley has the It Factor. Plus he’s pulling this new gimmick, not just with the hair but he’s going places… Those simple little things go a long way…i worked with Teddy Atlas this morning and he made a comparison not to Conor McGregor, he made a comparison with Sean O’Malley to Israel Adesanya that I thought was very interesting.”

O’Malley has always mentioned his fondness for Conor McGregor and has always wanted to be a superstar however, according to Sonnen, O’Malley is more like Israel Adesanya than McGregor.
