Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor’s first heated clash was at UFC 196. McGregor was the overwhelming favourite after Diaz took the fight on a few weeks’ notice. The lead-up to their fight was incredible. McGregor was in his prime, and Diaz was the underdog who always believed in himself.

When the fight began, McGregor started to get the better of exchanges in the first round. He was outstriking Diaz and clearly won the first round. McGregor threw everything he had and more in each punch to take Nate out. Unfortunately, Nate’s iron chin and McGregor’s depleting cardio paved the way for ‘Nate ‘The West Coast Gangster’ to take over the fight and finish McGregor in the second round.

It was one of the most iconic moments in the history of the UFC. What makes it more remarkable is the corner of Nate Diaz shouting during the contest and the overwhelming fan reaction in the background. Check out the viral video below:

Following the loss, McGregor remained humble and fought Nate again at UFC 202, winning a close decision over Nate Diaz. It was after this fight that Diaz shot to superstardom in the UFC. It is worth noting that both the fights happened at welterweight.

A third Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz fight should happen for the fight fans

The rivalry between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor started when Nate called out McGregor in one of the greatest call-outs in MMA history following his win over Michael Johnson. McGregor and Diaz took it to the next level with their rivalry and are among the highest-selling PPVs in MMA.

Both Diaz and McGregor are not getting any younger. They are in their thirties (Nate in his late 30s), and fighters fall out of their prime during this age. Diaz is a free agent after completing the last fight on his contract against Tony Ferguson at UFC 279. McGregor will fight Michael Chandler soon after completing his stint as the TUF 31 coach.

A third fight between the two remains unlikely as Nate is not under contract with the UFC. But that can change at any moment. A trilogy fight between the both could be the greatest treat UFC can give the fans. It would be fantastic, and on the other hand, it also puts an end to the rivalry.
