UFC fame Yoel Romero had a lovely meeting with Khabib Nurmagomedov when the Dagestani was just starting to break out in the UFC. “The Eagle” helps the Cuban fighter reach out to his former wrestling opponent, Sazhid Sazhidov in Dagestan.

Before the amazing fan-favorite fighter Yoel Romero made it big in the sport of mixed martial arts, the Cuban was a wrestler who represented his country and is also an Olympic silver medalist. One of the toughest matchups in his wrestling career was against a wrestler from the city of Makhachkala of the Republic of Dagestan. Romero visited Dagestan to wrestle against Sazhid Sazhidov in a professional competition.

Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is an ardent fan of wrestling himself, claims to have watched this bout and was a friend of Romero’s opponent. Turns out the Cuban developed a good relationship with Sajid. Many years later, Nurmagomedov and Romero met each other while they both fought under the UFC banner.

During the meeting, UFC former middleweight Yoel Romero requested a young Khabib to film a message for his former opponent Sazhid Sazhidov back in Dagestan. Nurmagomedov, very kindly said he would be down to shoot a video right away and also translate from English to his native tongue. The moment was very special to see as a young Khabib was proud to meet the Olympic wrestler, Yoel Romero.

“Hey, Sazhid, my man. I want to see you again. Maybe next year, I come to Makhachkala. And I will go with you, your family, and to your house. I want to talk to you. I love you, bro. I have good time with you in wrestling, I had time with you in Makhachkala. God bless you, my man,” said Romero in his message to the wrestler.

Yoel Romero reveals when he first met Khabib Nurmagomedov

The first time former UFC title contender Yoel Romero met Khabib Nurmagomedov was when he was 14 years old. During Romero’s visit to Dagestan during his wrestling days, he stayed in the former lightweight champ’s city for three months. Ahead of UFC 248 pay-per-view event, Romero recalled the time he met a young Khabib.

“I remember the first time I saw him, he was in the United States, was at my first fight. I finish the weigh-in, and he went, ‘Hey, Yoel, you remember me?’ I said, ‘no, who are you?’ He said, ‘I am Khabib Nurmagomedov, I see you the first time when you stayed in Dagestan, a big tournament and I saw you and I was only 14 years old,'” Romero narrated his meeting with “The Eagle”.

The Cuban fighter has great admiration for the people of Dagestan and regards Khabib as one of the greatest ever to do the sport. He also said that the city of Makhachkala of the republic of Dagestan is the best city in the world for wrestling.
