Retired UFC Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is counted among the best in the franchise’s history. With 29 wins and 0 losses, Khabib took an exit from the UFC on his own terms.

Prior to the fame, however, many contentious images of a young Khabib have surfaced on the internet over the years. The particular picture in question here is one where Khabib is posing with a pistol in a “gangster”-style posture. The picture had stirred the fans and media when it came out.

Khabib’s supporters defend him, claiming that the photo was taken out of context and did not really speak to the fighter’s behavior. They said the picture merely reflected regional norms, as Khabib grew up in a rough neighborhood where carrying a weapon for self-defense was common. Khabib’s supporters also stressed that he had a clean record and had never been involved in anything illegal, which invalidates any such allegations against the retired fighter.

Some, on the other side, criticized Khabib for clutching a pistol in a photo when he was still a kid. They stated that as a public person and role model for many, Khabib should be more responsible and cognizant of the messages he transmits. Especially in the age of social media, when pictures may be readily misread.

Khabib and Islam Makhachev share a strong friendship together. Javier Mendez, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s former coach, reveals that Khabib reportedly had real concerns about Islam Makhachev before his fight against featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284.

Last year, Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from MMA training to spend more time with his family back home in Dagestan. Despite giving up the sport, Khabib Nurmagomedov kept a close eye on Makhachev leading up to the fight. Islam Makhachev prevailed over Alexander Volkanovski in the epic UFC 284 bout at RAC Arena in Australia.

Volkanovski has pushed for a rematch ever since Islam won the decision at UFC 284, and Dana White recently revealed that it could happen. UFC President reportedly stated that both Volkanovski and Islam had to fight someone before he considered the rematch. “Yair vs. Volkanovski, Islam vs. somebody, whenever that happens, and then you do the rematch,” Dana says.
