“I was going to fight him” – WWE star Bobby Lashley recaps when he almost stepped into the ring with Tom Aspinall

Bobby Lashley reveals he almost fought Tom Aspinall

Bobby Lashley is known as the WWE champion of the world. But before the Kansas native became a huge WWE star, he was one of the pioneers to bridge the gap between mixed martial arts and pro wrestling. In a recent interview, the 46-year-old reveals that he was in talks to fight the heavyweight prospect from the UK, Tom Aspinall.

Tom Aspinall has been in the combat sports field for quite some time now. Though the fighter has only 15 pro fights in mixed martial arts, he was also believed to be a future world champion. The UK star is only 29 years old and was noticed by legendary fighter Bobby Lashley. Bobby was a mixed martial arts fighter from the year 2008 to 2020. He has fought in major promotions like Strikeforce, and Titan Fighting Championship, and ended his professional fighting career with Bellator MMA.

In a recent interview with BT Sport, Bobby spoke about various fighters from the UK who are on a rise to the top. Tommy Aspinall was one name that struck a chord with the WWE champ. “I know Tom has been going hard. I actually was gonna fight him long time ago. I know his name was kinda brought up. I was looking at him and I knew his history,” said Bobby speaking to BT Sport.

Being a veteran of the sport and having been through a lot of physical pain himself, Lashley empathizes with Tommy on his recent injury at UFC London. This was Aspinall’s second time headlining a London card and was faced with a challenge in Curtis Blaydes last weekend. The fight came to an uneventful end after Tom’s knee compromised after only 15 seconds of the fight.

“He’s the guy that really has a lot behind him,” says Bobby on Tommy in the BT Sport interview. “Sorry he got injured but um, I don’t know what that does with his career. Injuries always suck. I don’t know how long he is going to stay away. But if he can get back in there and keep his momentum going I could he be up there…but he has to be tested [in the octagon].”

Tom never lost a bout inside the UFC octagon since his debut in 2020. The only loss that he has on his UFC record is at UFC London, which was stopped due to injury. Tom surely is one of the favorites to be the champion of the division given he is only 29 years old. He also has the co-sign of the legend Bobby Lashley.
