Zhang Weili and Colby Covington have reignited the friendship that stemmed from the pre-fight press conference of UFC 268. Both Weili and Covington lost their respective title fights at UFC 268 to Rose Namajunas and Kamaru Usman, respectively. Zhang Weili destroyed Amanda Lemos at UFC 292 in Boston and retained her strawweight title.
One of the UFC fighters who came to applaud Weili’s accomplishment was none other than Colby “Chaos” Covington. The fighters interacted in the comments of the post by the Instagram handle mommakaisen, which was taken a screenshot and posted by DovySimuMMA on X.
Covington commented, “So happy for you” to which Weili replied, “Thank You, Handsome.” Weili’s dominating performance was praised by Dana White in the post-fight press conference. Moreover, Zhang Weili called Covington “Handsome” during the UFC 268 pre-fight press conference.
The 34-year-old has now defended her title for the first time in her second reign as Women’s Strawweight Champion. Covington, who is at odds with almost every fighter on the UFC roster, has a cordial relationship with the Chinese champion. It is evident by his interaction at UFC 268 and his social media comments post-UFC 292. With the win, Weili will be looking to defend her title in China. Weili won the title for the first time against Jessica Andrade in China.
Covington will be looking to attain the title that has evaded him twice in his career. The fight against Leon Edwards would most likely be the co-main event of UFC 295, which is headlined by Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones. Zhang Weili would most likely defend her title in the early months of 2024.
Tatiana Suarez is potentially the biggest threat to Zhang Weili’s title reign

Tatiana Suarez was out of action for three years due to an injury. Her return to the octagon has been nothing but spectacular. In her most recent fight, she submitted former Strawweight Champion, Jessica Andrade. Suarez’s wrestling is on another level when compared to other Strawweight contenders. Zhang Weili has already beaten the other credentialed wrestler, Carla Esparza to win back the title.
Zhang Weili’s wrestling capabilities have significantly improved since her two losses to Rose Namajunas. It was her wrestling that got her the victory over Joanna Jędrzejczyk, Carla Esparza and Amanda Lemos after her losses to Rose Namajunas. Weili being the champion is financially beneficial for the UFC as it opens the market in China, which is the second most populated country in the world behind India.
Tatiana Suarez is not the only one in title contention. Weili’s compatriot Yan Xioanan is another fighter who could face the champion China. Dana White‘s remarks about Tatiana Suarez’s victory over Jessica Andrade could be taken as a title opportunity for Suarez. But nothing is a done deal, and Xioanan may face Weili in their native country.
