“I would run back to her grave to promise her I would make it as a fighter,” The heartbreaking love story that shaped Nick Diaz’s fighting career
Nick Diaz
Nick Diaz is an American mixed martial artist and the former Strikeforce welterweight champion. He won his first fight by submitting Mike Wick with a triangle choke just after his 18th birthday. He took an absence for fighting in 2015 and returned to the competition to take on Robbie Lawler at UFC 266. Nick Diaz lost his fight against Robbie Lawler in the third round, and this Lawler avenged the loss that Diaz gave him 17 years ago.
While many tragic things transpired in Diaz’s life, there was one moment in particular that shaped his career as a fighter. Diaz doesn’t really reveal much about his personal life, but he talked about his high school girlfriend who later killed herself. Diaz shared the whole incident, on MMA Fighting. He said, “I had a really hot girlfriend, Before anybody in my class made it out of high school, I was in a continuation, which I also got kicked out, by then I was training to be a pro fighter. My girlfriend knew it but had started dating Bart to make me jealous.”
He continued, “Before I ever had my first pro fight, July 5, 2000, Bart had a party at his house. The night before, Stephanie had told me she loved me.An hour later I got a call from her mom saying, ‘Are you with Stephanie?’She came straight to my house to get me, took me up and down the Frontage Road on Highway 99 by my Grandma’s house next to their trailer park. There was a wreck on the freeway. I jumped the fence and saw only one car and ambulances.”
“The girl I loved more than anything had tried to kill herself ,” Nick Diaz shared the most devastating memory about his past
Diaz was devastated after the whole incident, he revealed that her girlfriend attempted suicide, and it completely broke him, “She had walked and killed herself on the freeway. The girl I loved more than anything had tried to kill herself for the third time and succeeded.”
Diaz said, he promised his girlfriend that he would make it as a fighter, and he fulfilled his promise, “I would run seven miles and back to her grave just to promise her I would make it as a fighter like she knew and had told me she knew and was proud of me.So this sport and this commission have done everything to stop me from being in the position that I belong. They suspended me for a third time. For five f**king years for something that makes the whole world a better place. I’m the original Conor McGregor. He wouldn’t be who he is if it wasn’t for me. Nothing against him.”
