UFC Megastar Jorge Masvidal and his bitter rival but more importantly, former best friend, Colby Covington are finally getting together inside the cage to settle their rivalry come March at UFC 272. This has to be one of the baddest rivals, not only in UFC but in all of combat sports history. Masvidal and Covington were friends for 8 long years before some back and forth in Covington’s former training centre American Top Team led him to be expelled from the gym while Masvidal stayed in there.

Covington with all the extraneous things under his control now seems to be more focused on his fighting career more than ever and seems to deliver a show of heavy ground and pounding over someone who’s hard to be taken down and keeps the fight standing for setting up a cold knockout like Masvidal. This fight couldn’t get any better with the matchup and beef perfectly blending with the competition between both the fighters. Also, this fight is going to be the first fight in five years to headline as a non-title fight and doesn’t need the names of the likes of Conor McGregor or Nate Diaz.

“Nothing bigger in sport of combat than a grudge match,” Chael Sonnen on Jorge Masvidal vs Colby Covington

MMA Legend Chael Sonnen had some reservations about the fight which doesn’t mean he is not in favour of the fight but feels like something is missing off the already filled table of this mass event. He, therefore, put on some ideation on the marketing aspect of this fight through one of his videos on YouTube.

“There’s nothing bigger in a sport of combat than a grudge match,” this is Sonnen’s immediate reaction to the confirmation of Masvidal fighting Covington. “You can get nationalistic medals, you can get personal battles, nothing trumps feud… This [feud between Masvidal and Covington] is as pure and straightforward as it gets.”

Sonnen praises the feud for the views it would generate overall, “These boys are going to fight for 25 minutes, that’s what is needed, these boys are going to sell an arena, these boys are going to have you mark it on your calendar. But we don’t do pay-per-view that isn’t for championships so how does that work. Not everything I just said can be true, something has to be wrong, unless, are you with me? Unless Masvidal puts up the belt.

This is where Sonnen threw out his idea of Masvidal getting his BMF aka Baddest Motherf**ker Belt on the line which was a one-off thing back in 2019 when Masvidal fought and won the belt against his then opponent Nate Diaz at UFC 244. The belt was used as a marketing gimmick to get the viewers on the screens for this fight, which deservingly did well on pay-per-view rates. Sonnen elaborated upon his immediate thought further, “Nobody seems to want that except for me, but I think perhaps with the clues we’re given, even with the little baby tiny steps, I feel we’ve made it in that direction.”

What do you make of Sonnen’s idea of putting up the BMF Belt back on the line? Do you think the idea will surpass the expectations of a different excitement more than the first time it was introduced? Who do you get it winning between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington?
