UFC’s dominant lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, excels inside the octagon with his efficient and calculated approach. However, his picks for UFC 291 didn’t pan out as expected, resulting in a series of unfortunate outcomes.
Makhachev had chosen fighters like Dustin Poirier, Jan Blachowicz, De Lima, Green, and Chiesa to emerge victorious at the PPV event. Surprisingly, only Bobby Green managed to secure a win with an impressive performance by submitting UFC veteran Tony Ferguson in the final moments of the third round.
Unfortunately for Makhachev’s picks, Gaethje knocked out Poirier in the second round, Blachowicz lost by decision against Alex Periera, and Kevin Holland swiftly submitted Chiesa in the very first round. Makhachev didn’t shy away from his misjudgment, humorously accepting that his predictions were far from ideal in a tweet, stating, “That was bad picks.”
Now, Makhachev faces a tough challenge ahead, scheduled for a second defense of his lightweight title against former champion Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. With the likes of Oliveira, Gaethje, and Volkanovski in the queue, Makhachev’s hands are full. Yet, if he can replicate his teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s feat and retire with the UFC title, his championship reign will indeed go down in the history books.
