“That’s a scary guy”- Stephen Thompson open to fighting Khamzat Chimaev for a shot at the welterweight gold

Stephen Thompson vs Khamzat Chimaev

Stephen Thompson, one of the older fighters in the UFC and especially in the welterweight division is looking for a title shot against No. 1 P4P fighter Kamaru Usman and his next fight against Belal Muhammad in UFC Fight Night 199 seems to be his stage and opportunity for him to get close to have that chance at the belt.

Thompson sat down with MMA Junkie and said, “You can’t keep feeding the same guys to Kamaru Usman. A good win over Belal, maybe another fight, we’ll be looking at another title shot. I’m not giving up on it.”

Thompson went on to say that it is very exciting to against someone who’s improved that much better and it would be an honor just to test himself out with Usman. However, Thompson knows that his current credentials aren’t enough to take on the champ so in order to make a legitimate claim that he deserves a shot, ‘Wonderboy’ looks to take out another contender in Khamzat Chimaev.

“To see him against Hermansson was like, ‘What?’ That guy’s a welterweight. He looked bigger than Hermansson did. That’s a scary guy right there with that quality of wrestling. It’s ridiculous. At some point in time, we’ll probably be facing each other for sure.”

Stephen Thompson is set to take on Belal Muhammed as the co-main event for UFC Vegas 45 on Dec 18th and in an interview with MMA Junkie, he said that he’s excited about the fight and is aspiring to be UFC’S oldest fighter one day.

“I’m kind of surprising myself. I have always loved fighting, but I never thought that I would be where I am today and still feeling the way I do. And obviously, that has a lot to do with the coaches and the way I’m training so hats off to those guys. I want to break records, man. I wanna be the oldest guy who ever fought in the UFC. They are going to have to bring out a senior division or something.”

Thompson may be looking to make a new record of fighting into his 50’s but he still has a long way to go to beat Hall of Famer’s Randy Couture record of fighting his last fight at 43. Can the 38-year-old Stephen Thompson beat the record? We shall find out in a few years.
