“Two bums,” Leon Edwards reacts to Jorge Masvidal vs Colby Covington at UFC 272
Leon Edwards reacts to Jorge Masvidal vs Colby Covington fight
While the entire MMA world is going berserk over the announcement of the much-awaited grudge fight of Jorge Masvidal vs Colby Covington, Leon Edwards does not seem too interested in this one.
The welterweight division is one of the most excited weight classes in the UFC if not the most exciting division. The 170-pound division is stacked with elite fighters that are not too far away from each other in terms of rankings or talents. With countless fights to make, the UFC recently announced what the fans wanted to hear, Jorge Masvidal vs Colby Covington is finally booked and will headline UFC 272 on March 5th.
Both Jorge and Colby are coming off title fight losses. Masvidal is ranked at #6 while Covington is ranked #1. Leon Edwards, the fighter who is considered one of the unluckiest in the roster cannot stand the sight of the two fighters. While the world views this fight as the biggest grudge match in UFC history, to Leon Edwards, it is nothing more than, “2 bums coming off losses.”
Is Leon Edwards next in line for the title shot?
Prior to booking the fight with Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal was scheduled to fight Leon in a three-round brawl at UFC 269 to settle their long-time beef. The fight was canceled after Masvidal was forced to pull out of the fight owing to an injury.
Edwards was also considered the fighter to take on Kamaru Usman at UFC 268 by many but the promotion went with Covington instead and sold out a blockbuster fight. Edwards has not lost in the UFC for a long time and his last loss comes against the champion himself in 2015.
Edwards is ranked #3 in the welterweight division below Gilbert Burns, another recent title contender. Edwards is now the favorite to challenge Kamaru for the title in 2022 and is looking to avenge his loss in 2015. If things go according to plan and no surprises pop up, Edwards could possibly be headlining an event against Kamaru Usman with the welterweight title at stake in 2022.
