This welterweight bout was one for the ages. With all verbal allegations and confrontations ending here, UFC Vegas 11 settled the rivalry of Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington.

The personal build up to this fight has been racial, political and at times, simply ugly. There is little doubt that these two genuinely very much want to punch one another in the face, yet there’s so much more on the line than any beef. After giving Kamaru Usman his toughest test to date but ultimately coming up short, Covington is on the hunt for a second title shot. Meanwhile, Woodley is desperate to prove that his days in the sun are not yet over. As the 38-year-old former champion simply has not performed at all in his last two bouts.

Tyron Woodley vs Colby Covington- As it happened

Round 1

The first round saw Covington unleashing like a trader bullet onto Woodley. While latter kept him composure, Covington was eager to leave an early mark to signify his dominance. Although Covington has more shots and significant shots, Woodley was never really attacking. The former wanted a takedown and eventually got one. The first round was evidently dominated by Covington.

Round 2

The second round saw Woodley started to attack a bit more but Covington was not slowing down. For ever shot taken by him, Covington came up with a counter, be it a jab, be it a punch or even a combination. Both fighters were showing positive signs but Covington was seemingly connecting better. Woodley was able to get past his attempts of a takedown too. It was a clear Woodley was looking for the one big shot. But he was trying to bait Covington in having no success even towards the end.

Round 3

In the third round Woodley needed a much required turnaround as Colby was evidently dominating him in the first couple of rounds. Covington landed an inadvertent eye poke to Woodley and the action was stopped before it began. The stoppage seemed to benefit the former interim champion more as he came out with variety of offence. Woodley tried to reverse but Covington immediately switched it back again. There was nothing for Woodley to do. Outside of a Hail Mary punch,  this fight was well on its way to being a carbon copy of Woodley’s last two fights. This whole round has been almost entirely cage control from Covington.

Round 4

While Woodley’s corner was pleasing him to attack. Even in the 4th round Covington had no signs of slowing down even for a moment. Seemed like every break gave him a refill. Covington was on top and was started to chip away. It appeared this was all part of the plan for Covington to drain Woodley for three rounds and then start really wrestling and Woodley was not offering up anything off his back. The difference in attack was so clear that Covington had 107 body blows to Woodley’s 34. Not just that his total strike tally was 227 by the end of round 4. Where as by that time Woodley had just 52 strike tally.

Round 5

Going into the last round it was only up-to a finish that could save Woodley from the jaws of defeat. But with his fuel running on empty it was only about time Covington unleashes the last lunch to hammer down Woodley. It rightly happened in Round 5, when Woodley holded onto a guillotine. Woodley let the guillotine go and as Covington shifted position on top, Woodley screams out in pain. Covington postured up as Woodley said, “my rib” and referee Miragliotta ends the bout before any punches can be thrown.
