Khabib Nurmagomedov fought Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in a monumental event. It is one of the most famous fights in UFC history. The fight had an enormous build-up, heated back-and-forth exchanges, and pure hatred among the fighters. What most people forget is that Khabib laid out the game plan long before the fight ever happened.
The Dagestani elaborately explained what he would do to Conor McGregor while pointing out his weaknesses and incompetencies. Many have tried this narrative before, often to mislead the opponent. However, Khabib went according to the plan and used his wrestling to dominate McGregor for the better part of the fight. Conor knew his exact strategy and was helpless in front of it.
A reporter asked Khabib, ” If you and Conor fight and you can’t take him down, what’s your game plan?” Khabib replied, saying, “It’s impossible, brother.” He truly believed in taking Conor down in a potential fight and maul him for twenty-five minutes. He said even if McGregor defended a takedown once, he would go after him one hundred times. “What he gonna do, he don’t have conditioning, he don’t have wrestling, he don’t have grappling…,” said Khabib.
Khabib went on to explain how he would take McGregor down, and if anybody remembers how the fight went, they would know that Khabib implemented the same game plan. As predicted, Conor came back strong in the third round but went out of gas and succumbed to Khabib’s choke in the fourth round. McGregor’s Netflix documentary revealed a new perspective on the Conor-Khabib fight’s aftermath.

Fans of Conor McGregor passionately defended the idea of him being able to defeat Khabib in a rematch. McGregor himself mentioned facing his rival again several times. However, it never came to fruition as Khabib retired in 2020. At UFC 254, Khabib defeated Justin Gaethje and retired from the UFC with a perfect score of 29 wins and 0 losses.
Conor McGregor’s new documentary ‘McGregor Forever‘ highlighted this event and opened a never before seen perspective of the Khabib-Conor fight to the general public. One scene shows Conor McGregor’s immediate reaction to Khabib’s retirement announcement in the octagon. “A little bit, yeah,” McGregor replied when the cameraman asked if he was surprised by the sudden retirement news. “Although I know he’s always had retirement on his mind, he doesn’t really want to be in there too much,…It is what it is. I couldn’t give a f***,” he said.
One fan tweeted, “After watching the new McGregor documentary I can confidently say that Khabib ducked the rematch”. This drew the attention of Nate Diaz, who shares a similar despise for Khabib. Regardless, Khabib Nurmagomedov is completely out of the fight game and focuses on spending quality time with his family back in Dagestan.
