Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler 1 throwback: What happened when Diablo met the Ruthless the first time?
Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler 1 at UFC 47
Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler 1 happened 17 years ago. Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler are going to face each other again in one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history. Let’s take a look at what went down when both these monsters met for the first time in their careers.
At UFC 266, Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler meet for the second time inside the octagon at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 25th. The duo shared the octagon in April 2004 at UFC 47 in the main card. The event took place in the Michelob Ultra Arena.
During their first meet inside the octagon, Lawler was one of the rising welterweights of that time. Diaz though on the other hand had not made too much of a name during that fight. Prior to the Lawler fight, Nick had only one fight under the UFC banner. His debut was a stunning submission against Jeremey Jackson in the third round.
“Ruthless” on the other hand had 5 UFC fights under his belt coming into UFC 47. Lawler had a record of 4-1 at that time with only one loss against Pete Spratt. That loss stopped Lawler’s three-fight winning streak but the welterweight immediately came back from that loss with a win.
How did Diablo beat Ruthless at Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler 1?
Lawler and Diaz wasted no time to get into action. Diaz being Diaz started taunting his opponent asking him to engage. Lawler drew the first blood as he hit Nick with a body shot only for Diaz to clip him with his right hand on the chin that almost dropped the former welterweight champion. Robbie responded with a combo that caught Diaz. The first round went toe to toe and Lawler was introduced with the famous “Stockton Slap”.
Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler 1 lasted for 1 minute 31 seconds in the second round as Nick caught Lawler with that Stockton right hand and his opponent was dropped on the floor. The referee was quick to see that Robbie was out and stopped the fight but Diaz slid in a punch just for good measure. Lawler was pissed that the fight was stopped. Can we see “Ruthless” avenge his loss from Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler 1 on September 25th?
