Khabib Nurmagomedov’s legacy inside the Octagon has earned him a lot of respect. However the same cannot be said for the reigning wrestling champion Jordan Burroughs.
Back in 2018 ahead of the clash between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor at UFC 229, there was a rumor spread that Jordan was in Conor’s camp. However, Jordan Burroughs took to Twitter to clear out that he was not training with the Irishman.
Also later he appeared in an interview with Flowrestling which revealed the reason behind the lack of respect for khabib. He said, “I am not a big fan of Khabib…Khabib actually called me out …there was an Instagram comment from Khabib Instagram page that was like JB’s training conor, he needs to train in wrestling he was like he is helping Conor he needs some help of his own in his wrestling.”
Jordan always revealed that he never met Conor or Khabib in person and had no idea where all the rumors were coming from. He also revealed that those comments were disrespectful towards him and he thought of Khabib as a person who trained with a lot of people that Jordan has defeated in wrestling.

When Islam Makhachev claimed he could defeat Jordan Burroughs in wrestling
Makhachev was preparing for his fight with Dan Hooker in the United Arab Emirates in October 2021. He had a lengthy chat with former UFC heavyweight Daniel Cormier champion prior to that matchup. Makhachev mentioned in their talk that he’d like to wrestle an Olympic wrestler. When Cormier suggested Jordan Burroughs as a potential opponent, Makhachev claimed that he could easily beat the Olympic gold medalist.
Makhachev said, “You have to brother, bring some Olympic-level guy to AKA. I wanna wrestle. Jordan Burroughs is gonna be good match… I respect him brother but this guy have just double leg, I’m gonna defend his double leg and that’s it. And how he take point? He go double leg, everybody defends, he push everybody. But in AKA, we have rope, he can not push me.”

Islam Makhachev is a former combat sambo champion and stands a fair chance against Jordan Burroughs. However, Jordan Burroughs’s accomplishments in wrestling look far more impressive with an Olympic gold medal and a 6-time world championship to his name. There is no doubt that the two will have a very exciting match if they ever meet paths, whether it be in wrestling or mixed martial arts.
