“I may have put an ingredient or two”- Dan Lambert admits he might have pushed Colby Covington to pursue his evil persona

Dan Lambert on Colby Covington

Colby Covington is going to face his arch-nemesis and former best friend, Jorge Masvidal at the main event of UFC 272. Covington climbed the welterweight rankings with his back-to-back wins, but according to the UFC, he lacked that certain fan appeal, and they were eventually going to lay him off.

Covington’s former mentor, Dan Lambert (owner of American Top Team) told him about this chatter before his fight against Demian Maia. Covington took matters into his own hands and roasted the entire nation of Brazil after leaving Maia in a pool of his own blood. He switched up his entire persona, and he’s been living as the villain of the MMA community ever since.

Dan Lambert partly blames himself for Covington’s antics, in a recent interview with The MMA Hour, he said, “I may have put an ingredient or two into the early mix of what you see now, I didn’t think Dr. Frankenstein was going to come along and add every other ingredient in the world to it and make it blow up the way it blew up.”

Lambert claims Colby might have taken things too far, “It’s one thing s******* on a particular country or a particular guy to get under people’s skins and to get yourself noticed, it’s another thing to take it to the next level and s*** on every single person in the entire sport and everybody in every other sport. Men and women and people in different weight classes and then people in your own gym.”

At the end of the night, Colby did save his career, and Lambert thinks that’s what that really matters, “If the story had gone the way it looked like it was gonna go and he had one fight left and then was gonna be unemployed and looking to go fight somewhere else versus what he’s accomplished and the money he’s made and the notoriety he’s gained, positively or negatively, I think it worked out pretty damn well for Colby,” Lambert said. “So I think some of the initial advice that I may have given him was probably sound advice at the time.”
