Brazilian club Gremio Anapolis goalkeeper Ramon Souza was shot in the leg by a police officer who intervened during a post-match confrontation at the Jonas Duarte stadium. The young keeper sustained a significant injury from a rubber bullet.

The unsettling incident took place during a Campeonato Goiano league match between Gremio Anapolis and Centro Oeste. Following the match, the players of both the teams and their staff members were involved in a heated scuffle, resulting in police intervention. However, in a shocking turn of events, young goalkeeper Souza was shot in the leg by a police officer using a rubber bullet while attempting to defuse the situation.

A close-up video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking global outrage against police brutality from football fans. Seemingly visible in the viral video, the goalkeeper did not look to pose any major threat to the armed police officer, but was still shot. Souza received immediate medical attention, and the club condemned the incident as a ‘criminal act.’

Meanwhile, the military police of the State of Goias, Brazil, confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident while denouncing it. They issued a statement condemning any inappropriate behavior by their officers.

The club emphasized that a police officer’s duty is to ensure public safety and should not involve such violent acts. They declared July 10th would be remembered for this horrific incident and stated their intention to pursue legal action to hold the responsible officer accountable.

This isn’t the first such incident in South America. Last year, Argentine national team players clashed with Brazilian police over fans being beaten up, during a World Cup qualifier match.
