US Open 2020: Djokovic, Zverev, Osaka cruise through 2nd Round as Gauff, Isner crashes out

With no cheering, buzz and bizzare of fans, Day 1 at US Open 2020 saw Djokovic sailing and shining through. Naomi Osaka cruising past Misaki Doi, Isner falling over Johnson, teenage sensation Coco Gauff losing, Alexander Zverev toppling Anderson, Norrie winning over Schwartzman and Tsitsipas dominating the opener.
Novak Djokovic sails past Bosnian Dzumhur
World No.1, Novak Djokovic ameliorated his record to 24-0 on the season with a speedy 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 win against Damir Dzumhur in straight sets.
“He’s one of the quickest players on the Tour. He played some really good shots and it was anybody’s game midway through the second set,” Djokovic said on court after the match. “I was pleased to close out the second set and then stepped it up [by] a couple of levels.” he added.
Djokovic will oppose Kyle Edmund next who squashed Alexander Bublik 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-0.
Naomi Osaka cruises past Misaki Doi post spillting sets
The 2018 US Open champion, Naomi Osaka had stepped back from the Western and Southern Open finals on Saturday due to a hamstring injury. However, she triumphed over Misaki Doi 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, in the last match at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night.
Seed 4 dominated the match with her serve. She hit six aces and bagged 76% of the points on her first serve over Doi’s 55%. Osaka’s next opponent is the hard-hitting Camila Giorgi in Round 2.
John Isner los his first round match to Steve Johnson
The highest-ranked American, John Isner, bowed out of the U.S. Open in the first round. He lost rank 64, Steve Johnson, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (3). The match lasted to approx. 4 hours at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Post-match both the fellows hailed each other hesitatingly at the net with a protocol-binding handshake. The rank 22 had not lost in the first round of U.S. Open since 2008. However, winning five in a row Johnson has had Isner’s number recently, especially in tight matches.
Coco Gauff out in first round
16- year old Coco Gauff who beamed by winning two rounds at last year’s US Open, was squashed amid the silence by Anastasija Sevastova in the first round on Monday 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Gauff struggled to attain the same form. She double-faulted 13 times. Her serve broke 7 times against the 31st seed. She tried her best to avoid the double faults in the final game of the third set. But, failed in her attempts to avoid an array of forehand errors.
Alexander Zverev topples 2017 finalist Kevin Anderson
Alexander Zverev aced through the most high-profile first-round match in the men’s draw closing the day session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. He cruised past 2017 finalist Kevin Anderson 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. The German stumbled through the second set as he lost but finally managed to seal the deal.
“Kevin is not somebody you usually play in the first round,” Zverev said. “I’m extremely happy to get through.” He added.
Cameron Norrie wings over Diego Schwartzman
Diego Schwartzman falls 3-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 to Cameron Norrie. With this, he became the highest seed to lose so far at the Open. No. 9’s physical struggles with cramping against the persistence of Norrie were ultimately gave no. 76 nine points in a row. Hence, the match swung in his favour.
Stefanos Tsitsipas dominates Albert Ramos
Tsisipas makes a smooth start aceing 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the opener. Seed 4 broke seven times in the match. Three of them came on break-point double faults. He never faced a breakpoint on his own serve. Tsitsipas struck 38 winners and 26 unforced errors with his aggressive game plan on the day.
“I had a clear picture of what I was doing, where I was pressing. The depth on my ball was good,” said Tsitsipas, who felt the key to the match was the psychological edge he gained after early success on the return.
