US Open 2020 Putintseva Osaka Rogers and Brady sail through to quarters
US Open 2020 Day 7 saw Yulia Putintseva cruising past Petra Martic, Naomi Osaka shining past Kontaveit, Shelby Rogers flourishing against Petra Kvitova post a thriller match and Jennifer Brady adding on to her breakthrough season as she squashed Angelique Kerber out of the tournament.
Putintseva topples Martic
Yulia Putintseva cruised to the quarter-finals after a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win against Petra Martic. The match saw a seesaw as Putintseva aced a 5-0 lead in 19 minutes in the first set. The second set saw Martic turning the table around with her opponent needing a back treatment. Eighth seed was all set for the last eight, but Kazakhstan’s Putintseva capered back with a 5-1 lead and swung past into the quarters.
Osaka beats Kontaveit
Naomi Osaka swung her best into the quarterfinals as she stormed past Anett Kontaveit with a 6-3, 6-4 win. She firepowered over the 14th seed making her bow out as she tried saving five match points at 5-4. Osaka will battle Shelby Rogers next.
Rogers squashes Kvitova
Shelby Rogers stuns Sixth seed Petra Kvitova with a thriller, aceing down to her first-ever US Open quarter-final. She fended off four match points and won the tie break in the final set to a 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(6) win.
“Day 72 in the bubble,” Rogers joked to laughter from the media during her post-match press conference. “It’s been a long time here in New York. I’m happy to be sticking around for some more.”
“The tiebreaker, the whole match actually, was a little bit of a roller coaster for both of us,” said Rogers. “The first set, you know, a tiebreak. [Kvitova] upped her level a little bit in the second there. I was up a break in the third, she breaks back. She’s just hitting missiles. She served unbelievable. To get that double-fault there in the [third-set] breaker, a little luck was on my side today I think. I just kept trying to hang in there and defend her balls, take care of my serve there in the third after I got broken. Thankfully somehow got it done.” she added
Brady blasts past Kerber
Jennifer Brady squashed Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-4, making her way into the quarters. Seed 28 added another milestone to her breakthrough season as she flourished past 2016 champion Angelique Kerber and reached her first Grand slam singles quarterfinals.
“Really happy with making the quarterfinals here at the US Open,” Brady said, during her post-match press conference. “Hopefully I keep going,” she added.
