Ben Shelton announced himself to the tennis world by reaching the semifinals of the US Open last year. In his bid to go two steps further the year, Shelton gets his campaign in New York underway with a clash against Dominic Thiem.

Shelton has flourished this season, racking up 30 wins in 49 matches. Thiem, on the other hand, is competing in the last Grand Slam of his career. The Austrian has previously announced that this season would be his last on the ATP tour before hanging up his racket. The 2020 US Open champion excited the tennis world with his brilliant displays but has unfortunately been hampered by injuries.

Ben Shelton vs. Dominic Thiem: Match Preview

Ben Shelton has been one of the most outstanding American men’s singles players this season. He reached his first semifinal of the year at the Auckland Open but had to wait till April to pick his first title. He beat his compatriot Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to win the Houston Open.

The 21-year-old failed to make his mark in any Grand Slam event this year, with his best run coming at Wimbledon where he lost to Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16. He arrives at the US Open after reaching the semifinals at the Citi Open and the quarterfinals at the Cincinnati Open.

Dominic Thiem has struggled with his game this year. The former World No. 3 is currently on a four-match losing streak. He last won a match in May in the qualifying round at the French Open. He eventually failed to make it to the main draw of the Grand Slam event after losing in the second qualifying round.

The Austrian last won a main-draw match at the Estoril Open, where he beat German Maximilian Marterer 6-1, 6(3)-7, 6-4 in the first round. He was handed a wildcard entry into the main draw of the men’s singles at the US Open having won the title in 2020.

Shelton and Thiem have claimed one win against each other in the ATP. Thiem won their first meeting at the 2022 Estoril Open 6-2, 6-2. Shelton then got the better of the Austrian at the 2023 US Open 7-6(1), 1-0, with Thiem retiring from the match due to a stomach problem.

Shelton is the clear favorite to beat Thiem in their first-round meeting at the US Open. The American has been in great form since the summer hard court season and is hoping to get past his semifinal finish at the event last year.
