Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev will face each other for the third time this season when they lock horns in the quarterfinals of the 2024 US Open. Despite the doping saga becoming public days before the season’s last Grand Slam, Sinner has done well to put the criticism and antagonism aside to play at his best. He is currently on a nine-match winning streak, which started at the Cincinnati Open in August.

Medvedev, on the other hand, arrived in New York with two consecutive losses. He crashed out of the Canadian Open after losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets in his opening match. He suffered the same fate at the Cincinnati Open, losing to Jiri Lehecka in the first round. However, at the US Open, the Russian ace is playing one of his best tennis of the year.

Jannik Sinner has been impressive at all Grand Slams this year, reaching at least the quarterfinals of the four Majors. Sinner made a semifinal exit at the French Open, losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. He won the Halle Open ahead of Wimbledon, where he lost to Medvedev in the quarterfinals. At the US Open, he comfortably beat Alex Michelsen and Christopher O’Connell in the opening rounds before passing his first significant test against Tommy Paul with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-1 win.

On the other hand, Daniil Medvedev is aiming to recapture the US Open like he did in 2021 when he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final. The Russian is yet to win any title this year. He will be aiming to put cold water on Sinner’s red-hot form when they meet in the quarterfinals of the US Open.

If he does beat the World No.1, there will be no player ranked higher than him left at the US Open, making him the title favorite. In New York, Medvedev secured straight-set wins over Fabian Marozsan and Flavio Cobolli in the opening rounds before breezing past Nuno Borges 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth round.

Jannik Sinner vs. Daniil Medvedev: Match Prediction

Medvedev leads 7-5 overall in the head-to-head with Sinner. He won their most recent encounter in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. That said, Medvedev was once leading the Italian 6-0 before Sinner closed the gap, losing just once in their last six meetings.

Medvedev and Sinner know each other very well. The Italian is playing well at the moment and wants to prove to his critics that he deserves to end the year as the World No. 1. If Medvedev plays at his best, Sinner will find it difficult to break the Russian. This could be a tight affair, with the match going down to the wire.

Match Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in five sets.
