Defending champion Jannik Sinner is set to take on Alexander Bublik in the fourth round of the US Open. The World No.1 is seeking to become the first player since Roger Federer (who did it from 2004 to 2008) to defend the US Open men’s singles title. But he will be facing a tough test against Bublik, who defeated him in their last meeting.

Bublik advanced to the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in his career after beating Tommy Paul on Saturday (August 30). The Kazakhstan star has been in great form since reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-finals at Roland Garros three months ago and has won 20 of his last 22 matches on tour.

Jannik Sinner vs. Alexander Bublik: Match Preview

Jannik Sinner has won two of the three Grand Slams played this season, and at the US Open, he’s seeking his third. He arrived in New York after an unsuccessful title bid at the Cincinnati Open, as he was forced to retire due to illness in the final match against his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz.

Back on the court at the US Open, he kicked off his campaign with a masterclass performance against Vit Kopriva winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. He continued with the form in the second round, beating 2024 Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. He earned his place in the fourth round after coming from a set down to beat Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

Alexander Bublik, on the other hand, has been in great form in the past three months. The World No.24 claimed his first ATP title of the season at the Terra Wortmann Open in June, beating two Grand Slam champions (Sinner and Daniil Medvedev) en route to the title. In July, he then claimed the Gstaad Open after beating Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the final.

Then at the ATP 250 Generali Open, he claimed his third title of the season beating Arthur Cazaux. At the US Open, he opened his account with a straight-sets win over former champion Marin Cilic before overcoming Tristan Schoolkate 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. In the third round, he beat home favorite Tommy Paul 7-6(5), 6(4)-7, 6-3, 6(5)-7, 6-1 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the round of 16.

Jannik Sinner vs. Alexander Bublik: Match Prediction

Jannik Sinner’s straight-set winning streak came to an end against Denis Shapovalov in the third round. Though, he rallied back to win the match in four sets, he still had issues with the serve, winning just 55 percent of his second serve throughout the match, his lowest since competing at the 2025 US Open.

However, he holds a 4-2 lead in his head-to-head record against Alexander Bublik on tour, but the latter has won two of their last three meetings, including their most recent at the Terra Wortmann Open. But Sinner leads 2-0 on hard courts and 1-0 in Grand Slam events. Their only major tournament meeting came at the 2025 Roland Garros, where he defeated the 28-year-old in straight sets.

Bublik understands how to play against Sinner, but he has only defeated the Italian star twice on grass. Sinner is known to play his best tennis on the hard courts. Though Bublik is great on his serves and volleys, he will have to pray that Sinner won’t be at his best when they faceoff.

Match prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
