Jannik Sinner has admitted that he could have been a skier but chose to make a career in tennis instead. The US Open champion has been known to have made several key decisions in his career that have defined him as a player.
Sinner won a National Junior title in skiing as a kid growing up in the German-speaking area of Dolomites. However, at the age of 13, he decided to leave home and join a tennis academy, and the rest, they say, is history. Now at the age of 23, the Italian looked back at the decision he made and stated that he was proud of it.
Sinner has established himself as one of the best young players on the ATP Tour. He won his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January and then went unbeaten until March when he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells.
This year, Sinner has won six titles, including two Grand Slams and two Masters 1000 titles. He is yet to lose a final this year and has tightened his position as the World No. 1 as the season heads into its final leg.
Recalling his youth and his decision to pick tennis over other sports, Sinner stated that he was glad he stuck with tennis despite making many mistakes in his formative years.
I was a much better skier than tennis player when I was young. Luckily, I chose tennis though. In skiing, you make one mistake and you can't win the race anymore. In tennis, you can make loads of mistakes… You just have to accept it and just try to keep going.Jannik Sinner said (via Live with Kelly and Mark)

Sinner ended US hopes for an American champion at the Flushing Meadows when he beat Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in a final that lasted for only two hours and sixteen minutes. In the women’s singles, Aryna Sabalenka defeated American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 to also win a maiden title at the US Open.
Jannik Sinner aiming to keep improving after US Open victory
Jannik Sinner beat Taylor Fritz in the US Open final to win his second Grand slam of the year. The 23-year-old, who won the Australian Open, couldn’t win the French Open and Wimbledon. With Carlos Alcaraz winning those two, this is the first time since 1993 that all four Majors were won by players 23 or younger.
Sinner is now only the fourth man in the Open Era to win the Australian Open and US Open the same year. After lifting the title at Flushing Meadows, the Italian revealed that the hard work never stops and that he will look to make improvements every day.
So many big wins for me this season, starting off with Australia. Playing so well there gave me confidence. The work never stops. I know I can still improve, as we saw today, a couple of things. But you have to be proud with what you have and the rest you have to work for it.Jannik Sinner said (via ATP)
The Italian has tightened his World No. 1 position after his US Open triumph. He has moved 2,885 points clear of Alexander Zverev, who is the new World No. 2.
