‘If she wants to go to 125, who can stop her’ – Valentina Shevchenko is not writing off fighting Zhang Weili at flyweight

Valentina Shevchenko
Zhang Weili was stunned by Rose Namajunas at the recently concluded co-main event of UFC 261. A massive leg kick to the head from Thug Rose knocked out the Chinese in the very first round. Weili lost her strawweight belt in the process, while Thug Rose became the first woman to win the same title on two separate occasions.
Prior to the match, there were lots of talk about Zhang Weili beating Rose Namajunas and then moving up to the flyweight division to take on the champ Valentina Shevchenko. Unfortunately, it looks like it might take a long time, at least until she is done with a rematch against Rose Namajunas.
Valentina Shevchenko addressed this in a recent interview with James Lynch of LowKickMMA. Shevchenko revealed that no one would stop Weili from moving to 125lbs once she decides. Bullet Valentina also didn’t write off fighting the former strawweight champion.
‘I assume she’s going to have a rematch with Rose so this is what is going to be the next step‘ – Valentina Shevchenko
Shevchenko was quoted as saying, “If she wants to go to 125, who can stop her? Nobody can stop her? It’s her decision. It’s the same with Jessica Andrade. But she will have to have her fight to claim she’s ready for a title fight. This is how it’s supposed to be but yeah (I’m open to it).
She then concluded, “I assume she’s going to have a rematch with Rose so this is what is going to be the next step. And after it, it is probably going to be something they will think about.”
Shevchenko defended the title the same day Weili lost her strawweight belt to Namajunas. Shevchenko took on Jessica Andrade and made light work of the Brazilian, winning via. TKO in the second round. With that win Shevchenko extended her win streak to seven.
As for Weili, she would be focusing on her rematch against Namajunas, and getting her hands back on the strawweight title.
