The next big ICC event that is upon the cricket world is the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2026. The two host nations for this World Cup are India and Sri Lanka, and one can expect some good subcontinent conditions throughout the tournament.

As we slowly crawl towards the event, ICC has been coming up with different updates regarding the tournament. The recent big update that the ICC has come up with is the venue for the big final of the tournament.

For the first time, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the final of the T20 World Cup. Many believe that the audience capacity of more than a lakh has given the ground preference over the iconic stadiums such as the Wankhede in Mumbai and Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The last time the T20 World Cup was held in India, back in 2016, Eden Gardens had hosted the final. The last time Wankhede hosted a final was back in 2011 when MS Dhoni‘s six famously won India the World Cup.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has previously hosted an ICC final. It was the heartbreaking 2023 World Cup final for the Indian fans when Australia lifted their 6th World Cup, beating the hosts.

It is important to note, though, that if Pakistan makes it to the final of the T20 World Cup, then the final would be shifted from Ahmedabad to Colombo in Sri Lanka. This is due to the strained relationship between the two countries in recent times.

Both nations have decided to have their matches held on neutral grounds to avoid any kind of security conflict. The recent Champions Trophy in Pakistan saw India play all its matches in Dubai as a result of this decision. Pakistan would like to follow suit and not play in India.

ICC Men’s T20I World Cup tentative dates out

ICC, just after finalizing the venues for the possible finals in the upcoming T20 World Cup, has now also given all boards the tentative dates of when the tournament would be scheduled. With the IPL set to commence around mid March and last up until the end of May, ICC has had to prepone the original idea of keeping the tournament in March and April.

The new dates that ICC has come up with suggest that they would most likely schedule the tournament between the 7th of February and the 8th of March. This would allow the tournament to take place smoothly without a clash with any other cricket league. It would also give players enough time to rest and regroup before the start of a taxing IPL.

India has its T20I schedule prepared right until the T20 World Cup. India will play a total of 7 T20Is in the current Asia Cup if it makes it to the final. Following that, they will travel to Australia for another 5 T20Is and will play two big home series against South Africa and New Zealand. Both those series also have 5 T20Is in each of them. That is a total of 22 T20Is and primarily against the top teams.

This will give India the right amount of practice before the T20 World Cup if it has to go ahead as per schedule. The team has not lost a single T20I series under Gautam Gambhir and would like to follow the same path for the following few months so that it can have a fruitful home World Cup. If India manages to win the World Cup, it would be the country’s third ICC trophy in four attempts since the start of 2023.
