Victor Wembanyama may have struggled in Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, but his talent with the ball in his hands is remarkable for someone that tall.

It was evident in the Western Conference Finals when he dominated Game 1, where it looked like nothing could stop the Frenchman from getting what he wanted.

Once the Oklahoma City Thunder turned up the knob of physicality, he struggled. But even then, they could not stop him from eventually ousting them from the title fight.

Now, the basketball world expects him to do the same, as his prodigious talent is there to be exploited. Fans still remember how his half-court buzzer-beater felt.

It seemed as if it was nothing for him, as he calmly jumped straight up and launched. Usually, players either lean forward to add extra velocity. But Wembanyama just shot it as if it were in practice.

Before Game 2, the 7’4″ superstar showed fans again why he is so revered to be the next face of the league. Among the current faces, Stephen Curry is known for launching full-court shots.

But to do that, he does calculate his distance and trajectory before attempting it. When Victor Wembanyama launched one from 3/4th distance ahead of Game 2, it was none of that.

The 22-year-old just casually launched in the middle of his warmup, and the ball just bounced off the backboard and straight through the net.

Fans in awe watching Victor Wembanyama’s trick shot

Basketball fans are already in awe of what Victor Wembanyama can do with the ball in his hands. He is no showboat like other superstars in the league, and does not generally lean into heaving trick shots.

But there is a reason the NBA decided to publish this video of him launching it from that distance. They knew what it would do, and they were right. Fans left comments of sheer appreciation for the center’s ability. Check out examples of those reactions below.

The irony of this situation is that Victor Wembanyama did not launch it as if it were a trick shot. Whenever players want to entertain the fans, they ensure the crowd is attentive. But this was the Spurs star just casually doing so in the midst of his workout. Moreover, it was his first attempt.

Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs have to rethink their strategy

This trick shot may have left fans in awe, but they would prefer that Victor Wembanyama and his teammates make the NBA Finals a closely fought affair.

Fans loved it when the Spurs battled the Thunder through seven games, and the viewership numbers reflected it. Now, with them trailing 0-2, fans might lose interest.

It so happens that no team in NBA history has ever won the championship after losing its first two games at home. It does not mean it cannot be done, just that it becomes much harder.

With the next two games at Madison Square Garden, the Spurs have to rethink their strategy. They either have to dominate and win the next two or forget about winning the title this season.
