In Short
  • Victor Wembanyama received an official warning from the NBA for skipping media obligations after Game 5.
  • His performance in Game 5 was statistically his worst of the series, scoring only 20 points with a 26.7% shooting rate.
  • Analysts criticized Wembanyama for avoiding the media, labeling it as a lack of accountability following a disappointing game.

When Victor Wembanyama dominated in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, many felt he was going to prove why the hype surrounding him was worthy.

The Frenchman had basically dominated almost every facet of that game and left many believing he would end the Oklahoma City Thunder’s run as the league’s top team.

After a mid by his standards in Games 2 and 3, he bounced back to dominate Game 4 to tie the series before it went back to Paycom Center.

In Game 5, those hopeful of ending the Thunder’s run wanted to see Wemby revert to his Game 1 and 3 self. However, the home team ensured a repeat of that would not happen.

They defended him as a team, and that collective effort stopped him at 20 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Statistically, it was his worst performance in this series.

But when one takes a closer look at the box score, they will notice that this might have been Victor Wembanyama’s worst performance since his rookie season. The center, with his elite skills, shot just 26.7% from the field and zero from the three-point line.

The NBA has warned the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama for violating media access rules. Wembanyama bypassed media obligations after Game 5 on Tuesday night.

This came about after the lanky center skipped the media. He may have been angry with himself after such a poor outing. But every player has an obligation to face reporters, no matter the game’s outcome.

Usually, players get fined for skipping media sessions. But keeping Wembanyama’s general affinity to take on anything the media throws at him, the league felt a warning was sufficient.

Skip Bayless flames Victor Wembanyama for ducking the media

Once this news of Victor Wembanyama ducking the media became public knowledge, it was bound to draw analysts into dissecting his performance in Game 5.

The alien looked like just another Earthling last night in a turning point game 5. The alien looked bad during the game, late in the game, and especially after the game when he ducked the media. That was not taking accountability at all. That was just straight-out baby behavior to me.

Skip Bayless said on Gil’s Arena

First, the longtime analyst labeled the Spurs center’s ‘alien’ hype a hoax. He felt Game 5 was proof that there were flaws to Wembanyama’s game, which makes him human.

On top of that, the former Undisputed host felt the 22-year-old behaved as per his age, as young players who do not have the maturity to deal with a loss tend to skip obligatory media sessions.

Former champion defends OKC’s physicality on Victor Wembanyama

After Game 5, Stephon Castle talked about how the Oklahoma City Thunder manage to get away with their extremely physical plays, whereas his Spurs do not get that luxury.

Time and again, many have pointed to this discrepancy. However, to a former champion, physicality towards a team’s best player is standard operating procedure in the postseason.

Wemby is getting the crap beat out of him. That’s what it takes. Kobe Bryant gets the crap beat out of him, Shaquille O’Neal would get the crap beat out of him… That’s a part of the formula in the postseason is to be ultra-physical with the other team’s best players… You get to the postseason, ultra physicality. That is what it is.

Richard Jefferson said

The now ESPN analyst pointed to how Michael Jordan‘s The Last Dance documentary proved how the Detroit Pistons beat him up before he started to get the better of them.

To Jefferson, Victor Wembanyama is bound to get the same treatment no matter which team they are facing. That is how the playoffs are, and he has to learn to battle against that and still come out on top.
