- Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are currently second in the Western Conference.
- The Spurs defended the Latino community after backlash from a fan's derogatory text about Hispanic attendees.
- San Antonio has a majority Hispanic population, which fans highlighted in response to the viral video.
Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs have surprised the basketball world this season after a stellar run to now place second in the Western Conference.
This run of impressive performances has caught everyone off guard, as many expected the team to take a step, but not as significant as this to leapfrog most of the regular heavyweights.
Their impeccable mix of youth and veteran leadership has vaulted a team fielding an inexperienced head coach, and led by a young superstar in the French phenom, into championship-contender conversations.
Victor Wembanyama has helped to build this excitement in San Antonio, as he and the franchise have been doing a lot to promote their home games.
That means that almost every other game, it is a sellout in Frost Bank Center, which is a sharp departure from the center’s rookie season, when sections of empty seats were still the norm.
KSAT News’ RJ Marquez got his hands on a statement from the Spurs, where they defended the Latino community, who have been the core supporters of the organization, and have been filling most of the seats.

That was after a video surfaced showing an old woman watching the Spurs play the Phoenix Suns at Frost Bank Center, texting a friend, asking how the Hispanics could afford the tickets.
It was in response to that friend’s text, which mentioned that there were too many Hispanic people in the arena who were there to watch Victor Wembanyama send his Spurs to the playoffs.
Fans react strongly to fan’s text message about Spurs supporters
When basketball fans saw a recording of this on social media, some were irate that the older woman’s phone was being recorded, which was basically an invasion of privacy.
However, most of the reactions to this clip were ones of utter disbelief. They pointed out how San Antonio, of all places, had a majority population of Hispanics.
For someone to seemingly undermine the Hispanic population on the basis of their income was something basketball fans were not having. They took to social media to slam the older fan. Check out examples of those reactions below.
San Antonio is literally over 50% Hispanic.

🤣 Why can’t you mind your business and enjoy the game . Why is race always a thing. Always boiling with hate

At first I was thinking what's the big deal but then I saw "How can they afford it?"

Shame on you Grandma.
San Antonio is one of the few historically hispanic American cities.

Very revealing. Race is about wealth

Victor Wembanyama and his fellow San Antonio Spurs teammates have brought exciting basketball to the city. For someone to undermine the majority population instead of enjoying the sport was not something basketball fans were happy with.
Victor Wembanyama and Spurs are close to becoming best team in the league
When Victor Wembanyama and his San Antonio Spurs defeated reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, three straight times, he reiterated that there was work still to be done if they were to be where he and his team want to be.

The 22-year-old still holds that opinion even though the team is just three games behind the Thunder in the overall standings. That means they have overtaken the Detroit Pistons, whose East-leading record could be under threat.
Considering how their new rivals have a tougher schedule than they do, Victor Wembanyama and his teammates could use their remaining run of games to usurp the Thunder and end the season with the league’s best record.
Sure, they will need to keep winning games and avoid the occasional lapse in concentration that can sometimes wreak havoc, particularly with inexperienced teams.
