Iga Swiatek was heartbroken as she failed to go big at the US Open once again. While Swiatek has won one title at the Flushing Meadows (2022), the Pole has not been able to live up to the expectations in other editions. In six attempts, she has made only one semifinal, when she eventually won the title.

On Wednesday (September 4), Swiatek took the court against Jessica Pegula fancying her chances for a second semifinal. However, an anticlimax hit the Arthur Ashe Stadium as Pegula ousted the World No. 1 in straight sets. While the American went full throttle, Swiatek struggled to play at her best.

Well, I'm always trying to have lower expectations, because I know that, like, any of us can win this tournament, and it's not going to be easy, you know. And also, I feel like when I have high expectations, I never perform well. So I try to lower them. But for sure, I mean, I remember how it was last year, and, you know, I'm not gonna just expect from myself that I'm always going to win. I'm more just focusing on the work.
Iga Swiatek said at a press conference

The Pole also touched upon her goals and expectations going into a tournament. She said that winning the semifinal or final is not her goal and that she is instead focused on working hard to overcome any problem that comes her way.

Everybody is always, like, speaking about results straightaway when you go to a tournament..I don't know, winning the final, the semifinal, and it's just not it. These are not my goals when I go in a tournament. I want to explain that I don't expect from myself the results. I'm more expecting that I'm going to work and I'm going to go through some problems and work on them.
Iga Swiatek added

With the US Open dreams crushed, Swiatek will now be focused on defending her title at the WTA Finals. Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, will face Karolina Muchova for a spot in her first Grand Slam final.
