Jannik Sinner is chasing his third Grand Slam title and has reached the semifinal at the Australian Open for the second straight time. After fending off Holger Rune, the Italian upset local man Alex de Minaur easily in the quarterfinals.
The 23-year-old has started to practice for his semifinal match against 21st seed Ben Shelton which is scheduled on Friday (January 24). During one of his practice sessions, he met his coach Darren Cahill‘s father, John Cahill.
Here’s the video:
Darren, who joined Sinner’s team in 2022, will not be coaching him after the 2025 season. Sinner had confirmed the same following his four-set win over Tristan Schoolkate in the ongoing tournament.
Under him and Simone Vagnozzi, the World No.1 reached the top of the rankings, lifted his two Grand Slam titles and won his first ATP Finals. Before Sinner, the 59-year-old worked with several Grand Slam champions, including Andre Agassi and Simona Halep.
Jannik Sinner said Carlos Alcaraz-Novak Djokovic rivalry is the best in tennis
In one of the quarterfinals, Carlos Alcaraz locked horns with 10-time Australian Open finalist Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard won the first set but in spite of giving his all, he failed to repeat the same in the next three sets and lost the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Jannik Sinner, who watched the match till the end, said their rivalry is the best in tennis.
Alcaraz will now have to wait for another year to achieve his goal of completing the Career Grand Slam. A win in the final would have made him the youngest to win all four Majors in his career.
The 10-time Australian Open champion has now registered his second consecutive win over the 21-year-old Spaniard following his straight-set victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Djokovic will next meet two-time Grand Slam finalist Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.
If Djokovic and Sinner emerge as winners in their respective semifinals, they will meet in the final, which will be their 9th meeting on the tour. They are 4-4 in their head-to-head contests.
