World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defended his Australian Open title, defeating second seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets in the finals. This triumph marks a third Grand Slam title for the 23-year-old.

At the closing ceremony, Sinner, who is known for his humility and class act, could be seen consoling Zverev with an embrace and a few words. This was Zverev’s third Grand Slam final, a heartbreaking moment for someone who has achieved so much in his career but always being inches away from a major to his name.

Jannik Sinner overcomes minor setbacks to defend his Australian Open title

At the 2024 Australia Open Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev in a five set match to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title. He had a phenomenal year afterwards, winning the US Open title and concluding the season as the World No. 1, a first time for an Italian.

On his road to victory, Sinner faced some health setbacks which include dizziness in his fourth round match against Holger Rune and cramps in his semifinal match against Ben Shelton. These medical issues did raise questions as to whether he could still continue in top form, as Novak Djokovic had retired after the first set of his semifinal match against Alexander Zverev, due to a hamstring injury.

Luckily, he played the finals rather comfortably and was pretty quick on the court, not allowing a single break point. Zverev’s previous Grand Slam final defeats were grueling five-set battles, but this match was far from competitive. The only moment that carried some tension came late in the second set when Zverev, leading 5-4, got to love-30 on Sinner’s serve and was just two points away from winning the set.
